Tell us a bit about you?
I’m in my final year of the Graduate Development Programme, having joined in September 2021. Before starting the programme, I had previously worked in marketing in the sport and leisure sector. I live in Perth and commute through to Scottish Government offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

What subject did you study after leaving school?
After school I did an undergraduate degree in Sports Studies with a focus on marketing and management.

What attracted you to apply for the graduate development scheme?
In my final year at university, I realised that I wanted to keep learning and growing, but outside of an academic setting.
At the same time, I wasn’t entirely sure which career path I wanted to pursue. What attracted me to the Graduate Development Programme was its unique blend of structured learning and real-world experience, along with the chance to explore a variety of roles and sectors.

What is your current post, and what does it involve?
I currently working in Cladding Remediation. I am working with colleagues across government to consider the Grenfell Phase 2 report and will be working as part of a much wider team to develop a response and implement any potential changes to policy.

What does a typical working day look like for you?
I typically clock in between 8 – 9am. My day will then consist of a variety of tasks and meetings.
I often try to get out on my lunch break, whether that be for a walk, a run, a quick gym session, or even a trip out to get food. I try to spend a little time at the end of the day reflecting, or on my professional development.

What has been your key highlight or achievement so far?
A key highlight was getting the opportunity to work on the planning and activation of Operation Unicorn, which is the series of events in Scotland which occurred following the death of the Queen.
It was an opportunity presented to all graduates on the scheme. It was an incredibly unique opportunity, which I am unlikely to experience again. It provided me with such a challenging and rewarding experience and was a great honour to be involved in such a historic event.

What are your ambitions for the future?
I hope to continue progressing professionally and would love to get involved in a fast-paced team, which I’ve found especially rewarding during the programme.
I’m also excited by the possibility of one day combining my professional skills with my passion for sport, and bring that experience into a role where I can make a meaningful impact.

What do you think is the best thing about working in the public sector?
I think the best thing about working in the public sector is the work-life balance it offers. I’ve never felt that my role has taken over my life, and being able to take time away when needed is a real benefit.

Would you recommend the programme to graduates thinking of applying?
I would definitely recommend the programme to graduates. It’s a fantastic opportunity for learning and development. Colleagues are always willing to support your development and offer opportunities where they can.
The experiences you gain and the skills you build are incredibly valuable for setting up a strong career in your chosen field.

Be confident in your abilities.
