Tell us a bit about you?

I am 29 years old and from (and live) in Glasgow. In my free time I enjoy watching films and TV shows, gaming, mixing music, and pub quizzes.

Did you study after leaving school?

I attended Heriot-Watt University and studied Psychology and Business Management. I then attended Glasgow Caledonian University and studied Msc Human Resources Management.

What and where was your first significant job?

My first significant job was part of a graduate scheme with Glasgow City Council as a Project Officer in the Human Resources Department.

When did you join the Scottish Government and what was the role?

I joined the Scottish Government in September 2022 as an Assurance Support Officer within the Directorate of Internal Audit and Assurance.

What first attracted you to working at government or in the public sector?

My long term plan was always to work in the public sector and the civil service specifically. I feel this provides the opportunity to make a positive difference to people’s lives across Scotland and this gives me a real sense of purpose and motivation.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me involves meeting with stakeholders to understand processes and key risks. This includes gathering information and evidence, reviewing documentation, and testing controls to assess whether they are operating effectively.

The results are analysed and documented to determine whether risks are being appropriately managed and to provide assurance on the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and control processes.

What do you like most about your current job?

That I get to work across a wide range of areas and gain insight into how different parts of the organisation operate.

I work full time.

What do you think is the best thing about working at Scottish Government?

Might sound cliché but the people! I’ve been fortunate to work with colleagues who are supportive, approachable and always willing to lend a hand.

The relationships I’ve built across teams have made my experience at Scottish Government enjoyable and rewarding, and it’s great being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the work they do.
